Start a program at your school for mentoring or tutoring elementary school children.
Build connection across schools and age groups. Coordinate with the local elementary or middle school to offer tutoring, mentoring, or group activities for younger students. Students can work one-on-one for homework help, or one-on-one or in groups in activities or games.
Tips & Suggestions:
- If the elementary school has an after-school program, older students can volunteer there.
- Cross-age tutoring helps high schooler students develop confidence in their ability to be competent leaders and role-models (Paterson & Elliott, 2006).
- Relationships with role-models in school settings have been linked to improved academic attitudes and self-esteem for students (Chan et al., 2013).
- Studies show that helping others and volunteering can make you happier! (Dunn, Aknin, & Norton, 2008).
